“Mind-Boggling One-Minute Mysteries and Brain Teasers” is comprised of two types of exercises. The first set consists of eighty different short scenarios (the one-minute mysteries) in which the reader is given a few facts and then is asked a question about what was presented. There is also a picture with each story – however, it is often there to lead the reader to an incorrect assumption about what the answer will be. There is a section in the back of the book, in which clues for each mystery are provided to help guide the reader in solving the case. Some of the mysteries are easy to solve but most of them require the use of logic, reasoning skills, and sometimes even a bit of imagination. Some of the answers are silly and in some cases the answer I arrived at seemed just as probable as what the authors intended. The rest of the book consists of pictures for the reader to study to deduce whether the picture is shown backwards, correctly, or if it is unable to be determined. The reasoning skills needed for this section include spatial orientation and direction. I found this last section much easier because there was always something specific about each picture that provided a huge clue.
This book is appropriate for ages twelve and up, although younger people may not be familiar with some of the scenarios involved. I tackled this book by myself, but I bet it would be fun to do it in small groups. It would help to have other people’s ideas and knowledge and I am certain people would really get to know more about each other based on the answers they supply. Exercises from this book could also be used in middle schools and high schools to help students develop and/or improve their logical thinking and deductive skills.
“Mind-Boggling One-Minute Mysteries and Brain Teasers” is a fun and entertaining book that will keep the reader actively engaged in solving the diverse scenarios presented. It can be enjoyed alone or in small groups. The answers people arrive at may lead to some hilarious moments.
