The “Power of Vitamin D” opens up a world of information that will provide an eye-opening education for many people. Dr. Zaidi explains in an easy-to-understand fashion how vitamin D affects our health in so many ways. From using vitamin D to fight rickets in post-Industrial Revolution Europe to seeing how it can be used to help diabetes and heart disease, the book explores and explains what vitamin D is, where it comes from, how it can help, and how it can hurt if our bodies don’t have enough of it.
Dr. Zaidi takes a harsh stance against big pharmaceutical companies, suggesting that in-depth research on vitamin D has been largely ignored because the companies don’t want to spend money on research that will ultimately reveal that people simply need to take vitamins; vitamins that aren’t expensive and can be bought without a prescription.
Another point that interested me was the statement that many people are under the illusion that they’re getting the required amount of vitamins because they take multi-vitamins but they are usually still lacking what the body actually needs because the guidelines for daily requirements are outdated for today’s lifestyles.
The author goes on to explain how vitamin D affects various areas of the body, how dermatologists and other doctors are providing incomplete information by focusing on their specialties and not on how the body functions as a whole, and he provides information on various symptoms and what they could mean.
The “Power of Vitamin D” doesn’t just paint a picture of doom and gloom. Dr. Zaidi explains how he and others have come up with their own recommended guidelines for vitamin D intake that are used in their medical practices, citing case studies that provide information on patients, their ailments, and how vitamin supplements have affected them and their health; natural sources of vitamin D, and their limitations, are also revealed.
Personally speaking, I’ve seen how vitamin D can affect health because someone I know suffered from various aches, pains, and a lack of energy until a doctor was finally found who tested vitamin D levels. The ailments completely disappeared when the vitamin D level was raised.
The “Power of Vitamin D” lives up to its name by providing people with the information they need to become partners with their doctors in managing their own healthcare.
