While it has been quite a while since I’ve last worked in a rigidly structured, corporate environment, it only took me mere minutes to be deeply immersed in Les McKeown’s “Predictable Success.” The more I read, the more I realized that out of the many books on business I’ve read in the past this was probably the one that I most agreed with. I found myself reminiscing about different companies I have worked for in the past, and I can say with utmost certainty that every single one was in some way depicted in Les McKeown’s “Predictable Success.”

I found Les McKeown’s understanding of business related “how?,” “why?” and “what next?” deeply insightful and presented in a very easy to follow and practical manner. His classification of the stages of business, with their very descriptive names (Early Struggle, Fun, Whitewater, Predictable Success, Treadmill, The Big Rut and Death Rattle), was both amusing and accurate. I’ve enjoyed reading the “stories” illustrating those stages, and often wondered whether he has met any of my former bosses, so close were those stories to my previous work-related experiences. The summary offered at the end of each chapter proved to be a very useful tool for those instances when I wanted to return to a certain point, but was not quite sure where I should look for it; and I was also glad that the book has been indexed, which made any such search even easier and more productive.

One of the thoughts that I found particularly valuable was that the business basically has to go through the early stages as described, but with proper management there is a sure-fire way to keep it in the Predictable Success for a prolonged period and in that manner avoid the last two of the described stages. A Treadmill stage can actually be beneficial to the long-term success, and innovation, as well as risk taking, is critical for achieving the lasting Predictable Success.

Les McKeown’s “Predictable Success” is a clearly written and easy to follow template for achieving what every organization dreams of, namely a sustainable and long lasting success. Well-organized chapters, engaging style and actual practical advice make it an even more indispensable book for any manager who wishes to understand the lifecycle of their company, the stage they are in as well as how to find their way to Predictable Success and how to stay there.
