This was a wonderful book! Charlie & Linda Bloom not only did a wonderful job finding and interviewing couples who have successful, long-term marriages but have been married to each other for over thirty-five years! Both of the Bloom’s are therapists who have studied couple relationships in depth for many, many years. The book is well-written, easy and enjoyable to read. And it was great to read something that clearly expressed the right things to do in a relationship and didn’t harp on the things that tend to go wrong.
The Bloom’s interviewed twenty-seven couples who had been together for an average of thirty years. Each couple’s story was a little different, but they all had the common thread of respect for each other and a commitment to make the relationship work. Most of the couples had relationships that were anything but idyllic. Together, they faced bankruptcies, issues with children and stepchildren, illnesses, past failed relationships and many more things. Even with all the obstacles that many of the couples faced, they faced it with love and found ways to work around it, and their relationships became stronger and deeper because of it.
So many of us grow up with the idea of the perfect fairy tale ending with one true love and are disappointed when life doesn’t work out that way. The stories that the Bloom’s present show that even if things don’t work out the way that we expect, that the perfect ending is still available by having a great marriage, but one that takes work on the part of both partners.
The stories are heartfelt and I found myself laughing, crying and cheering the couples on! This book is for all couples as the Bloom’s chose heterosexual couples as well as same sex couples. I highly recommend “Secrets of Great Marriages” for people who are in long-term marriages or hoping to meet that life-long partner that will be perfect for them.
