Author Laurie Kaplan‟s “So Easy to Love, So Hard to Lose: A Bridge to Healing Before and After the Loss of a Pet” is a workbook meant to guide the reader through the tumultuous grieving process of losing a forever friend. As one who has been through the spectrum of emotions associated with this type of profound loss, Kaplan speaks with deep understanding, sympathy, and love. A beautiful tribute to the bond between human and animal, “So Easy to Love, So Hard to Lose” is a must read for any pet owner.

“So Easy to Love, So Hard to Lose” is broken up into two sections. The first part, „So Easy to Love‟ takes the reader step-by-step through issues to consider prior to a pet‟s death. Conversely the second section, „So Hard to Lose‟ contains the steps to take after the pet has passed. Set up as a workbook and containing some minor editing errors, the book asks important questions and provides room for individualized answers, making it a truly personal journey for each person reading it. She explains the feelings associated with grief and puts them in an encouraging light so those reading can make sense of what they are going through. The book does not provide immediate happiness as this would only mask what lies beneath. Instead, Kaplan sees grief as a process – one meant to stimulate personal growth and eventual closure for those suffering.

“So Easy to Love, So Hard to Lose” is a deeply touching yet heart wrenching read. I didn‟t even get through the Author‟s Note at the beginning of the book before the floodgates opened. Even if you have never had to experience this sort of loss, Kaplan‟s descriptions of her dog, Bullet, his fight to overcome cancer and heart disease, and his peaceful death in her arms will cut you to the core. While it may be very easy to allow grief to consume and debilitate, Kaplan channeled hers in a way to comfort others. You feel her love and sympathy on every page; reading “So Easy to Love, So Hard to Lose” is liking having a trusted friend who truly knows what you are going through and having her there to hold your hand all the way through. She concludes her book with some information from her own grief journey, additional resources, and some touching poems. If you have somehow managed not to shed a tear up until this point, there is no way you will get through this section dry-eyed. Absolutely touching!
