It is September, 110 degrees Fahrenheit outside, and I am home for the second day with the flu. Being so hot outside and still early for flu season, it just doesn’t feel right. However, there is a positive side to this because I got to curl up and read Mary Wagner’s “Fabulous in Flats.” I have to say reading this book was truly good medicine!
“Fabulous in Flats” is written with each chapter being an essay about poignant and humorous moments in the author’s life. The stories ranged from her love of nature, her love of her children and animals to her challenging home projects. What I enjoyed most about each essay is that Wagner chooses to look at the positive side of each situation that she has faced. It was really refreshing to read her stories and laugh along with her. I also admired her for being willing to take on the tasks that she has taken given that she has such an incredibly busy life as a lawyer, mother, author, etc. I feel like I no longer have any excuses for not getting things done!
In many of these essays, Wagner also spends a great deal of time reminiscing as she goes through items from her earlier days. When she discovered some old Nancy Drew novels, she also brought back a lot of my own memories of reading them in my childhood. As she explores belongings left behind by family members, she also pays a great tribute to them, and the lives that they have led. This really made me think about how I want to be remembered, especially as I am sitting here feeling like I am dying!
I really enjoyed reading each essay, and I felt that the author has a true talent for bringing her memoirs vividly alive. As a matter of fact, when she writes about winters in Wisconsin, I actually felt like I was there in the cold, not stuck down in the desert with a fever. Very refreshing!
I highly recommend “Fabulous in Flats” for someone who really needs a good book to curl up with! I also think that it will make a great gift, especially for someone who has a very busy life, because she can make time to escape into an essay without needing to read them all in one sitting…like I did!
