“Marcie” by Carly M. Duncan is quite the emotional read. Kate (Marcie’s daughter), can’t remember all the relationships or marriages that her mom Marcie has had, but she does know that it has led to a lot of dysfunction in her family. Kate is so lost and confused about the current state of her family that she has no idea where to go or what to do.

When Kate’s mom and stepfather decide they are going to move to Guam to “find themselves” they leave Kate in the hands of her older siblings, who do a very poor job of taking care of her. One can say that Kate has always been on her own – she really doesn’t know her mother and they don’t have a close relationship.

Kate’s stepbrother Terry calls late one night and everyone knows a phone call in the middle of the night can never be a good thing. Terry tells Kate that Marcie is lost at sea. Terry tells Kate to get to his house as soon as possible. Kate thinks this must be some kind of joke, much like the kind of jokes Terry always pulls. Kate can’t believe that her mom is missing and really doesn’t understand the weight of the matter or grasp how this will affect her going forward. Kate calls her brother Luke to come get her so they can go to Terry’s house together and get to the bottom of this ominous news.

“Marcie” by Carly M. Duncan is a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat – hoping that Kate will find the answers she needs to move on with her life. The emotions of the characters and the details of the writing will make you cry, make you feel hate for Marcie and make you love and want to support and take care of Kate. This is a fast read and a book you will not want to put down until the very end.
