Article first published as Book Review: ‘Next of Kin,’ A Death Valley Mystery by Melissa M. Garcia on Blogcritics.
“Next of Kin” by Melissa M. Garcia begins when Detective Will Stellar is called to investigate a murder when a body was found in a lot behind O’Sullivan Bar & Grill in Lake City, Nevada near the Death Valley Park. The victim was Candace Carrick, Stellar’s old schoolmate from Kindergarten to 3rd grade. Her beat up body and a notebook with a list of names that include a good number of police officers seems to indicate that she was a prostitute, but research showed that was not the case. This murder investigation will unravel information about the police department that will take Detective Stellar on a dangerous ride with a vigilante on a murder spree.
Melissa Garcia produced a thrilling mystery that kept me turning pages until the end. Her character development skills were spot on with Detective Stellar and his internal struggle with integrity, as he dealt with the guilt for arresting his drug dealer brother, and as he faced the decision to break the rules to catch the city’s vigilante who was being cheered by crowds. The plot was filled with intrigue, mystery, and suspense, keeping me on the edge of my seat from start to end. Garcia did a great job pacing the story in such a way that I could immerse myself into the story, making it very difficult to put down the book. The format of the book was perfect to read as the font was big enough and the type setting had enough word and line spacing to allow the words to flow easily on your eyes.
“Next of Kin” by Melissa M. Garcia is a page turner murder mystery that will take readers for a thrilling ride. I definitely recommend it to all murder mystery lovers as an outstanding five stars read. I look forward to another book within the Death Valley Mystery series by Garcia, and will for sure check out her other books as well!
