“Remember the Promise” by Paula K. Parkison is her story. Artist, pastor’s wife, and mother were all roles in Parkison’s comfortable norm…and then suddenly without warning…the emotional turmoil of traumatic shock. February 24, 2009, Rod Parkison, pastor, husband, father was pronounced dead from a massive heart attack.

Paula K. Parkison shares glimpses into her journey in grief from the initial shock of finding Rod on the floor of their kitchen…lifeless, through the various stages of grief, anger, disbelief, and denial. Her message comes at a time when people need the Lord more than ever, whether grappling with cancer, diabetes, or severe depression, in times of crisis, pain and suffering. Paula brings a message of hope and example demonstrating how we can grow through these dark periods of pain and grief as the Lord meets us in these periods of transition.

The book features Paula’s original art work with a unique journaling format. The handwritten journal entries add a note of authentic feelings to the narrative and help the reader identify personally with the author’s hope in the midst of her personal and private pain.

On a technical note, I found that reading some of the print over the design on the darker colored pages was difficult. This may be a distraction for some who are desperately in need of the message of the book.

“Remember the Promise” by Paula K. Parkison is a book that needs to be readily available for church and family counseling, in church libraries, and shared with the families in the midst of personal brokenness. Highly recommended. A beautiful gift for gift giving.
