“Kasmah Forma” by S. Vagus explores death, life and chaos, in the world of Kasmah, a world divided into three distinct regions: The Maharaan Expanse, the Land of the Gadori, and Integrum. In The Maharaan Expanse we follow the story of Kahli, a young woman who struggles to reconcile the discrepancies of who she thinks she is, with what the rest of the world knows her to be. In the Land of the Gadori, we meet Toyo, a boy forgotten by the world, who desperately wants only to fit in and find his place. In the Integrum, the focus is on Mulat, the highest ranking official in the world of Kasmah, a man duty-bound to protect Kasmah, (without directly interfering) from the destruction brought about by mankind itself.
It’s obvious to me that a lot of time, care and effort went into the production of “Kasmah Forma.” The way the book was put together is a statement unto itself; solid, beautifully bound, the strong cover seems to be daring you to look inside, the unique layout of the chapters, the complete regional glossary in the back, even the weight of the volume screams that this is a book, and a story to be reckoned with.
“Kasmah Forma” is a truly unique fantasy novel that kept me inspired from the first page to the last – no small feat as the book is well over 500 pages. The writing is nothing short of genius – complex, entertaining, thought-provoking, and eerie. The characters have considerable depth and intrigue and I found myself often considering whether they are protagonists or antagonists. I suppose they are each a bit of both, you’ll have to decide for yourself. The descriptions of the world of Kasmah were meticulously detailed and I had a strong sense of the layout of each part of the land. Towards the end, Vagus masterfully weaves the stories of the three regions together in a way I never saw coming. Still, I have to admit to feeling a sense of loss at the end – I was searching for more finality to the story, but I seemed to have more questions than answers. Then I delightfully found out that a second book is coming soon!
“Kasmah Forma” by S. Vagus is a complex, totally absorbing fantasy novel, sure to draw a huge fan base, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
