In “Monsterland,” by Michael Phillip Cash, the world as we know it no longer exists. When an explosion in central Asia releases a toxic gas containing a virus, it spreads globally within four weeks, causing the largest pandemic known to humanity. The only way to contain the virus is by isolating the victims (who became zombies as the result of the virus) in quarantined campuses around the world.

Dr. Vincent Conrad has a vision to help the victims while his company conducts research in hopes of finding a cure. That vision is Monsterland, the world’s newest theme park with locations around the world. Conrad’s plan is to secure and house the zombies (I mean, the victims) in his theme parks, as a veritable safe haven of sorts, along with vampires and werewolves.

High school student, Wyatt Baldwin, is at work with his friends one afternoon, flipping hamburgers, when a seemingly homeless man wanders into the restaurant. Wyatt provides the man with a meal and common courtesy and is stunned to find out it is none other than his hero, Dr. Vincent Conrad. When Dr. Conrad presents Wyatt and his friends with special passes to the grand opening of Monsterland, Wyatt couldn’t be more excited, but Conrad’s plans are bigger than Monsterland, and things are not as they seem.

“Monsterland” is a mystery/thriller/sci-fi/fantasy story, but it’s so much more than that. It’s horror with a twist of humor. Gore with romantic undertones. Suspense, drama, intrigue – you name it – it’s in Monsterland. I felt the entire gamut of possible emotions while reading. I laughed at the author’s wit – zombies are “vitality challenged,” felt nauseous as I pictured limbs being torn from bodies, and sat tensely on the edge of my seat as the protagonists struggled to make their way through the theme park alive.

I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend “Monsterland” by Michael Phillip Cash. It is a spine-tingling story with a unique spin that definitely sets it apart from all the typical monster books on the market.
