In “Days of the Giants” by RJ Petrella, we follow Slater Barnes, an intern at the Boston City Hospital. The setting is the early 1990s, and the story is an intense medical mystery/thriller and suspense novel, full of politics, drama, and corruption. Barnes, in spite of his life-threatening medical diagnosis, devotes his life to the meaningful work he finds at the hospital. The problems begin when the mayor of Boston presses a rebuilding plan for the hospital through the Boston City Council. Some corrupt city officials smell an opportunity for profit and develop a scheme that in the end threatens the existence of the hospital, which in turn, forces Barnes and the rest of the staff at Boston City Hospital to defend the plan. Trouble ensues when a resident is murdered. Hold on tight for this one – it’s a ride you won’t soon forget.
The story captures the reader immediately with the powerfully intense prologue, and the same level of tension and drama is carried throughout the read. The writing is brilliant, speaking directly to the reader in an engaging narrative style. The scenes and settings are impeccably crafted and one definitely gets the feeling of being right in the middle of the story. The characters are fully believable and relatable and Barnes is a worthy heroic protagonist. The hospital setting is completely realistic with remarkable detail. Unexpected twists and turns in the plot keep the reader engaged and possibly wanting to read ahead!
I highly recommend “Days of the Giants” by RJ Petrella. That this is the author’s first complete novel is quite noteworthy, I can only hope we get to see more work from Petrella soon. He is sure to draw a large fan base from enthusiasts of multiple genres, including murder/mystery, medical thrillers, and suspense.
