“Rampage” by Alan Brenham is an action packed mystery thriller that grabs you from the very start. In the opening, Mad Dog and his gang of thugs are on a mission for Snake, Mad Dog’s former cellmate, and begin by annihilating the tombstone of the police officer that put Snake behind bars. Immediately afterwards, the gang heads to an arcade, where they rob and kill the owner. The gang seems unstoppable and unwavering in their quest for destruction, as Mad Dog spirals out of control.
Austin Police Detective, Jason Scarsdale, is on the hunt to find and stop the vicious, murderous gang before it’s too late. Scarsdale already has a full plate. He is the single dad of 9-year-old Shannon, and his girlfriend, Dani has just moved to Germany. Add to that, Scarsdale’s new partner on the force, Tatum Harper, an attractive divorcee, and you have all the makings for a whole lot of trouble.
I really enjoyed the writing style of Alan Brenham. Clear and crisp, the narrative is easy to read and follow. The generous number of characters and side stories effectively adds to the well-rounded plot. The action and drama is spot-on and seriously had me on the edge of my seat. Cliché? Maybe so, but it is what it is! The characters have depth and realism and I could fully engage in their stories. I also feel there is just the right amount of romance, and it doesn’t detract from the action. Being an Austin resident for many years now, I thoroughly enjoyed all the references to landmarks and destinations in the city, and felt like I was an insider in the drama and action.
I highly recommend “Rampage” by Alan Brenham to all who love an action-packed mystery thriller, full of depth and complexity and I look forward to reading more work from Mr. Brenham in the future.
