Typically, I avoid books about politics like the plague. However, when I saw the title of this book, “Small Government My A**” my attention was caught. I decided to give it a shot and I am glad that I did. Kevin Loesch takes a look at current issues and explains how they could be addressed from a Libertarian perspective. Because Libertarians and Republicans tend to be lumped together, he shows how the two parties are actually very different. With our current social issues, the Republican Party is taking neither the Constitution nor the Bill of Rights into account when making decisions. Using examples of how badly politicians have acted, he proves his points. He also cites resources at the end of each chapter, which allows the reader to access more information about each particular issue.
Presenting most of his arguments against the Republican Party does not let the Democratic Party off the hook; instead, he shows how the two have played off each other so that in the end, the same goal has been accomplished. As I read, I thought of the picture of a two-headed snake. One head named Republican, the other Democrat. Loesch discusses concerns about many common social issues and how they should either be addressed or left alone by the government. These topics include religion in politics, gun control, and legalization of drugs, legalization of prostitution, immigration, and personal privacy. Looking at how our government has been handling these issues is scary. Many of us have given away our constitutional rights for what we are brainwashed to believe is the good of society.
I wish I had a book like this to read when I was taking political science in college. Unfortunately, like most other colleges, I had a professor who had an agenda to sell. Rather than educate us from a neutral position, we had the views of his political party shoved down our throats. As a college educator, I still see this happening to students today. I will be recommending this book to my students when they are taking political science. I want them to have a chance to look at the perspective of another party and wake up to what is really happening with our government today. “Small Government My A**,” by Kevin Loesch is well written and easy to understand. The author presents the situation, his stance and briefly explains why. Exactly my kind of political book!
