With an extensive background in Human Resources, author Derek Miller gained a wealth of experience involved with Military Contracting when he decided to pursue that route for several years. In his book, “Military Contractor’s Handbook,” he offers a great deal of advice that will give the reader an idea of what their experience will be like and how they can best proceed to be successful. Instead of writing in a dry handbook-style manner, the author presents a lot of information about his own experiences, thus providing the reader a realistic vision of working overseas, especially in areas that are war zones. Initially, Miller covers the negative aspects of what the job might be like.

Miller also educates the reader on who to contact and how to proceed if they want to sign up and interview for a contract. The importance of following the rules is discussed, because the consequences of breaking them can cause a contract to be ended, and at a huge financial loss. Including all that can go wrong, and how uncomfortable the living conditions might be, there is also a huge emphasis on the benefits of working overseas. In addition to the financial gains, there is also a great deal of value in helping to improve the living conditions of the local people and our military service members living and serving overseas.

“Military Contractor’s Handbook,” by Derek Miller is a must read for someone interested in military contracting. The information provided is priceless and will help ensure that the work will be a success. I think it would also be valuable for family members to read, as they will gain a better understanding of the sacrifice that is being made for the family. While the pay is really high, families need to understand that this person will be gone for long periods of time and often unable to contact them. Understanding how the process works might make it easier for everyone involved to transition into having a military contractor in the family.
