“To Have and To Hold” by Ketley Allison is a read that will keep you glued to the book from page one till the very end. Allison’s writing and description of characters draw one in, so you feel as if you are right there in the action. She has the uncanny ability to add a bit of romance with a lot of twists and turns, and many surprises.
Emme and Spencer have a connection that can’t be broken even though both have moved onto new relationships. Spence couldn’t or wouldn’t commit to a relationship. Emme is vibrant, full of life and has in her own way moved on, or so she thinks. When Emme is kidnapped while scouting a location for an event, Spence goes ballistic, ignores his job as a lawyer, and his new girlfriend. I love that the characters are so different in their personalities, career goals and how they relate to people.
Most of us can relate to having a love that got away, yet would that person go to any lengths to rescue us? Would we downplay that relationship with our current partner? I appreciated the author’s strong points about how we think we know someone but often find out we don’t.
The author focuses more on her in-depth characters rather than the romance and the lasting bond they both thought they got over. Emme is strong and through experience learns to rely on her strengths to survive rather than rely on anyone else. Allison presents the characters with all their flaws which I liked; she didn’t write about them in the stereotypical style. Her writing style is easy to read, yet at the same time she throws in so many surprises it will keep readers on their toes. Many of her secondary characters were unique in their own way. I wasn’t particularly fond of Noelle, Spence’s girlfriend, as she appeared to be needy and controlling. Dave, Emme’s boyfriend, was arrogant and self-centered: one of those people you love to hate.
“To Have and To Hold” by Ketley Allison has everything a reader could want in a great story and I highly recommend it as a book that will keep your attention.
