In “What’s Going On? How Can We Help? The Consequences of Capitalism and Actionable Steps Towards a Healthy and Sustainable Future,” Freequill (the author’s nom de plume), proposes that the United States of America is currently experiencing a widespread crisis in terms of its political, social, and environmental development. It offers the reader a comprehensive plan of action for both the immediate future and the long term.
Freequill is exceptionally successful in proposing a problem, providing a package of solutions, and motivating the reader into action. The author uses insightful quotes by individuals from every walk of life and from varying points in human history to illustrate that most solutions aren’t new concepts—but they lack widespread application. Freequill backs up the position regarding the potential of their strategy by referring readers to publicly accessible supporting data. Freequill’s writing speaks to emotive as well as intellectual audiences by addressing values that speak to both aspects of the human condition.
“We must remain strong and try to remain grounded in compassion and evidence; evidence so we can reduce the influence of ego and become more sustainable, and compassion so that we can evolve beyond our current frameworks that result in suffering.”
Freequill balances the needs different types of readers eloquently and with efficiency. The book is organized in such a way that readers will feel as though they are having a conversation with a very wise friend. This book is written for individuals who can recognize the social, political, and environmental problems in the United States of America and other major industrialized nations. Readers will have to keep an open mind as some solutions can seem too simple (something the author anticipates) and unrealistic to implement in modern times. Keeping these concerns in mind, Freequill provides likely alternatives to readers who may not be ready to face revolutionary change as quickly as others.
While the criticisms of capitalisms are nothing new, this book does a phenomenal job taking into account the manner in which change can begin with the smallest of movements. I am impressed with the author’s choice to lead by example by partnering with a national organization to make the environment more sustainable. As a result of reading this book, I learned a plethora of information about consumerism and this has affected every day choices for me personally.
I recommend this book to anyone who can keep their judgements in check as there are some concepts that many in a consumerist culture would struggle to accept. I am quite surprised at the lack of mention of this publication in literary circles as it is poignantly written, and the timing seems perfect given our country’s political climate.
Freequill’s “What’s Going On? How Can We Help? The Consequences of Capitalism and Actionable Steps Towards a Healthy and Sustainable Future” is a powerfully written guide for creating a path to curb the harmful trajectory of civilization on the planet. Readers should be prepared to have a genuinely moving experience as a result of reading this book. While many people may be able to objectively assess the conditions human beings are currently under, few can so effectively offer applicable and realistic solutions.
