In “Coping Skills: Tools and Techniques for Every Stressful Situation,” Faith Harper incorporates her extensive knowledge as a therapist to teach the reader techniques on how to best utilize coping skills to deal with stressful situations. She incorporates a variety of techniques from different types of therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Positive Psychology, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction, Somatic Experiencing, and Jungian therapy. Written in a down to earth manner, she educates the reader about how our bodies respond to stress and how we can use a variety of coping skills to better enable us to survive. 

While we can choose to incorporate what works best for us, we also can gain a better understanding of why we respond to stress the way that we do. The section on Fight, Flight or Freeze, was extremely helpful to me because I gained a better understanding of why I tend to freeze in stressful situations.  Within the pages of this small book, Harper covers an extensive amount of information, yet she manages to do so in a manner that can be easily understood. As a counselor, I found a great deal of beneficial information to offer tips for students with whom I work. As a human being going through an extremely stressful time, I gained a lot of insight into how my body and mind are being impacted by stress. I also appreciated that she includes a large list of healthy activities that individuals can do to help them cope. I believe that there is something in there for everyone!

“Coping Skills,” is a must read for everybody! I was going to recommend it for individuals dealing with stress, until I realized that this includes all of us. Therapists, counselors and people in helping professions will also benefit from the information contained on these pages. Having read other valuable books in Dr. Faith’s Five-Minute Therapy series, I can’t say that I like one more than the other. Some readers will want to pick and choose among them for their personal issues. For me I hope to read them all, because I have gained knowledge from each of them. I would love to gift my coworkers with this collection. They are definitely perfect tools for the counseling trade.
