If you are looking to make some changes in your life then “Stop Self-Sabotage: Six Steps to Unlock Your True Motivation, Harness Your Willpower, and Get Out of Your Own Way,” by Dr. Judy Ho, is a must read.  Dr. Ho provides detailed information on the common underlying causes of self-sabotage and how to recognize and overcome them.  Her six steps are well organized, build upon one another, and complement each other.  Each step provides a series of simple yet powerful exercises and assignments for the reader to complete, which supports the learning and aids in developing new strategies to conquer your roadblocks.  Dr. Ho introduces us to several clients who take the journey through the steps. Their stories provide realistic examples of how working through the material helps to stop avoiding imagined dangers and develops the power to engage in self-affirming activities.

I enjoyed reading “Stop Self-Sabotage” very much. Dr. Judy Ho writes like she is chatting with a friend.  She skillfully delivers an abundance of psychological theory and some pretty deep concepts with the most fluid and easy-going style.  The information, while thorough, felt comfortable and welcoming to read.  With statements like “the key is believing that we are masters of our environment,” Dr. Ho’s words and tone are empathetic, non-judgmental, and extremely encouraging.  I found the exercises and assignments included to be easy to follow, and realistic to complete.  With each chapter, it became easier to understand the self-sabotage triggers, become more aware of their influence, and use new strategies to break the cycle of self-sabotage.  Particularly, striking to me was the idea of linking my vision of change to personal values in order to keep motivation grounded and sustained. 

With her expansive knowledge of psychological theory, comfortable writing style and well-choreographed presentation Dr. Judy Ho Has delivered on her offer to help readers “STOP SELF-SABOTAGE!”  This is a book you will want to take your time with, engage with exercises and assignments, and come back to again and again for the guidance, and support materials. I would strongly recommend “Stop Self-Sabotage,” to anyone looking to make simple, or significant changes in the personal habits that hold them back from becoming the best version of themselves.
