“Passing It Forward” is a guide on self-publishing and book promotion written specifically for indie authors. Author Lucie Ataya developed this resource as she prepared to release her second novel, with the original intention of it being a one-page checklist. In its final format however, “Passing it Forward” evolved into an indispensable guide full of indie-tested practices and is a compilation of feedback from multiple self-published authors that will benefit authors of all experience levels, at every stage of the publishing journey.

The guide is divided into sections for each stage of the process: Before Release, Gearing Up for Release Day, and After Release Day, and finishes up with some parting thoughts and acknowledgements. It’s just the right length, giving readers a 30,000 feet overview of many of the to-do related needs on the road to publishing.

Now, I’m a checklist kinda girl, so I am excited to share that “Passing it Forward” contains not one, but three checklists for each stage of the process. The first checklist: Before the Launch, is a must-do list of things many new authors may not even think about – or know to think about for that matter, but many of these things need to happen BEFORE the book is even complete. Tasks such as creating your social media accounts, finding BETA readers, assembling a street team and picking the platforms you want to use to distribute your book are all included in this checklist. The second checklist: Gearing Up for Release Day, includes everything you need to accomplish as you count down to your release date. The final checklist: After Launch lists things to work on continually to promote your book. This list is essential – you’re not finished just because your book is launched – you’re just getting started!

I particularly enjoyed the section on Social Media. In working with indie authors, I see all too often many trying to skip this crucial step. The reality is you need to be on social media today! Lucie provides concrete tips and practices to start building your social media platform, with a special focus on Instagram, which can be one of the most effective tools an author can have if used correctly and consistently.

This book was a joy to read, with Lucie reminding me what I love most about the self-publishing world  – the Indie Authors themselves, with their can-do determination and selfless support of each other! I know of no other group so committed to the success of each other and I say all this to note that several authors gave freely of their time and wisdom in order to make “Passing it Forward” a reality – wow!

The bottom line is “Passing it Forward” is an essential instrument for the independent author. Kudos to Lucie Ataya for providing a worthy tool in an aesthetically pleasing, easy-to-read, easy to use format, and making it available as a free resource for everyone.
