“My Dog is My Relationship Coach” is a wonderfully insightful text by Maureen Scanlon. She explores the extensive topic of relationships in a raw and authentic way. She further takes an in-depth look at a variety of subjects related to relationships which include dating, finances, co-parenting, and the importance of healing from past relationships before starting a new relationship, among others. The life coach gives personal accounts and partly those of her daughter, which adds to the warmth and plausibility of the topics she has discussed.

The title of the book sparked my interest. It is catchy and stimulating and serves as a hint to the thoughts expressed in the fantastic tome. The book cover is apt and relevant as well. The language used is easy to understand, making it easy for readers to digest the information in the book.

Author Scanlon advises one should ask crucial questions before dating someone. Relationships with family are key to knowing what dynamic the person comes from or what the “norm” means to them regarding family interactions. Again, being open and honest would be vital to allow someone to make an educated decision. Further, it is preferable to find out the culture, background, dynamics, and norms of the person. She intricately gives her examples as well.

There is a lot to learn from this book. The diction in the book is suitable for this kind of self-help book. I admired how the author does not guide from an overbearing point of view but rather encouraging and apprising gently.

My favorite aspect was how she blended her dogs’ relationship with her, her observations about them, and their personalities, to dwell deeper on the issues she is discussing. The writing style is brilliant and easy to follow probably due to the lucidity. There are a few poignant narrations of the other. They, however, do not leave the reader traumatized but rather more aware and wiser.

I heartily rate “My Dog is My Relationship Coach” by Maureen Scanlon 5 stars because of the variety of topics the author has explored in her book while interweaving them with her pet’s mannerisms and personality. That is certainly a natural talent. The book is packed with all the sagacity, counsel, and pragmatic tips. Singles and those willing to improve their relationships will find this book ideal!
