Set within the landscapes of New England’s Connecticut, “Eva” by Diane Solomon is a story about the captivating journey of Eva McGrath, a 26-year-old woman whose love for animals surpasses her connections with people. A dedicated veterinary student, her days are filled with both academic pursuits and volunteering at a local animal shelter, where she finds solace and purpose.

The narrative begins when Eva unearths the long-kept secret of her father’s existence. A poignant letter from her late great-aunt reveals her father’s identity and whereabouts, setting Eva on a path to discovering a lineage she never knew existed. The tale takes a riveting turn when Eva discovers the presence of a supernatural power within her, a unique ability that is about to turn her whole world upside down.

She also crosses paths with Michael, a young man who makes her question everything she thought she knew about love and intimacy. What ensues is Eva’s enthralling journey on a soul-searching expedition into her father’s enigmatic family, internal struggles of embracing burgeoning supernatural skills, and surviving the gripping limelight that she has never wanted to be a part of. And all the while, escaping a potential killer lurking in the shadows.

Through “Eva” it is evident that Solomon has a natural and enduring power of storytelling that takes readers into the intricate facets of thrill and the human experience. Solomon’s tale is beautifully crafted, infused with elements of love, romance, spiritual and metaphysical intrigue. As I read deeper into the story, I found myself drawn to Eva’s world as she internally wrestles with newfound abilities, her insecurities, and her indecisions of whether she should break down her protective walls to connect deeper with other people or keep them up to avoid any more hurt.

I love the character, Michael. I love his patience and understanding toward Eva, and his eagerness to be there whenever she needs a strong pillar of support. I also appreciated how he strongly refused to let her take him for granted, which showed the amount of respect he has for himself.

This beautifully written romantic suspense and metaphysical fantasy tale entices readers to ponder the delicate balance between vulnerability and self-discovery. I rate it five out of five stars for its beautifully structured plot, eloquent prose, relatable characters, vividly descriptive sceneries, and flawless editing. Lovers of romance novels with a supernatural mix will devour “Eva.” The content is suitable for an adult audience as it contains explicit sexual scenes that may be inappropriate for a younger audience.
